Changing data sources in Power BI Desktop and Power Query is quite simple. This article is a tutorial to explain how to change data sources step-by-step.

The example illustrates how to change the data source settings from the uskibpw1/10.10.5.23 server to the bpw.kemin.com server for a report which published on a Power BI workspace.

These steps are valid for a Power BI desktop file which is stored on a personal computer or network share, you can just ignore the download/publish of the report from/to the Power BI service.

In this example, we'll describe how to change the data source from uskibpw1 to bpw.kemin.com in Power BI report. 1. Download the Power BI Desktop file by going to the workspace the report is located in, then open the report.

2. On the upper left corner, click on Files, then Download this file

3. open the file you just downloaded, select Transform data, then select Data source settings

4. The report is currently connected to uskibpw1. To change source, select Change Source…

5. Change the server from uskibpw1 to bpw.kemin.com then select OK

6. Click Close

7. Select apply changes and then click on the Publish button to publish back your report to the original workspace.

8. Select the appropriate workspace, then click Select; the old file will be replaced with the newer version

9. Go to the workspace containing the report, select Update app to publish the new version featuring the changes performed to the report. This ensure all report's consumers will use the correct version of the report.
